Daily News wire reports, September 1st, 2008

AKIAK -- A 6-year-old boy was shot and killed by a 7-year-old in the Western Alaska village of Akiak on Sunday evening, Alaska State Troopers reported.

The boys were in an abandoned house and found a high-powered rifle, a Remington 700, troopers said.

The 7-year-old picked up the gun and there was "a negligent discharge," troopers said.

Troopers have not publicly identified the boys. The shooting isn't considered criminal and alcohol wasn't a factor, according to troopers.

The investigation is continuing.
